Every product begins with a problem that refuses to disappear. For iRe5, that problem was simple: smartphones had become powerful cameras, editing tools, and everyday work devices, but their physical storage remained fixed. When space ran out, creators were often forced to stop recording, move files, delete media, or depend on an internet connection before they could continue.
We believed local storage should be easier to carry and easier to access. Instead of asking people to attach another loose reader or rebuild their entire workflow around the cloud, we began with a straightforward idea: integrate expandable storage into something they already use every day - a phone case.
A product idea meets the public
On June 26, 2024, we launched our first Kickstarter campaign: iRe5 - Invisible Storage Makes Your iPhone Great Again. The campaign introduced a storage case with an integrated microSD card slot for compatible iPhones. Our goal was not to replace the phone's internal storage. It was to give people a practical local destination for photos, videos, and project files that could travel with the phone.
The response gave the project its first real public validation. By the time the 40-day campaign ended on August 5, 2024, 579 backers had pledged HK$306,209 against an original goal of HK$23,500. Those numbers mattered because they represented more than funding. They showed that storage limits were not an isolated frustration and that people were willing to support a physical, local-first alternative.
The community expanded the original plan
The campaign also made the product conversation more specific. Backers asked about different iPhone sizes, connectors, recording workflows, charging, microSD compatibility, and the practical details of using local storage on a phone. During the campaign, we expanded the announced compatibility range across supported iPhone 12, 13, 14, and 15 series models, excluding mini models.
That exchange shaped how we thought about product communication. A storage product cannot be explained by capacity alone. Customers need to know which phone model is supported, how the connector works, what kind of media workflow is possible, and where the limits are. Clear compatibility information became part of the product itself.
Crowdfunding was the starting line
A successful campaign does not finish a hardware project. It creates a responsibility to turn a public idea into a manufactured product, communicate changes, support multiple device versions, and deliver what was promised. After the campaign, our work shifted from demonstrating the concept to tooling, production, quality control, packaging, support, and fulfillment.
That transition taught us to separate three things clearly: what the product can do today, what is being developed, and what still needs validation. This distinction remains central to how we communicate production updates and compatibility now.
The first chapter of a larger system
The first iRe5 campaign proved that a phone case could do more than protect a device. It could become part of a creator's storage workflow. It also revealed opportunities beyond the first design: charging while connected, broader device compatibility, professional rig integration, faster transfer paths, and simpler backup organization.
Those opportunities eventually led to iRe5 Gen 2, including the Storage Case for daily carry and the X Module for more flexible production setups. The form evolved, but the founding idea remained the same: give people more control over their files through practical local storage.
We are grateful to the 579 backers who helped move iRe5 from an idea into its first public product chapter. Their support did not simply fund a case. It gave us the opportunity to begin building a wider mobile storage system.
