From Gen 1 to Gen 2: Why We Built a Two-Form Mobile Storage System

From Gen 1 to Gen 2: Why We Built a Two-Form Mobile Storage System

The first iRe5 product began with one clear idea: expandable storage should be close to the phone, not buried in a drawer or dependent on a network connection. Gen 1 integrated a microSD reader into a protective case for supported iPhones. It made local storage part of the object people were already carrying.

That integration gave Gen 1 its identity, but it also defined its boundaries. A model-specific case must match one phone's geometry. The reader uses the phone's physical connector. A creator who moves between daily carry, a filming cage, external audio, power, and other storage devices may need a different level of flexibility.

What Gen1 established

Gen 1 demonstrated that a storage case could be more than a protective shell. It could give compatible iPhone users a removable local storage path for media and files, including creator workflows built around compatible recording applications.

When The Gadgeteer introduced the product in December 2024, the publication highlighted both the integrated microSD concept and an early practical limitation: while the reader occupied the phone's Lightning or USB-C port, wired charging through that same phone port was not available. Wireless charging remained an option for supported setups. That snapshot captured the trade-off of the first design - high integration, but fewer connection paths while in use.

One system needed two physical forms

For Gen 2, we did not want every user to make the same compromise. Some people want storage to disappear into an everyday case. Others want a module that can join a filming rig, move between compatible devices, and connect with a broader set of production accessories.

That led to a two-form system. The iRe5 Gen 2 Storage Case is designed for supported phone models and everyday carry. The iRe5 X Module is a separate storage and connectivity module designed for more flexible creator setups, including use with compatible iPhone and USB-C Android devices.

The forms are different, but the product direction is shared: local expandable storage, a high-speed data path, pass-through charging, and a workflow that can connect a phone with removable media and compatible peripherals. Exact functions still depend on the selected version, phone, application, card, and connected equipment.

The 2026 Kickstarter chapter

We introduced iRe5 Gen 2 publicly through Kickstarter in 2026 under the title Bring Expandable Storage Back to Smartphones. The 40-day campaign ran from April 24 to June 3, 2026. It was supported by 528 backers and raised HK$437,925 against an original goal of HK$5,000.

This year's campaign did more than fund another case. It gave the two-form system a public starting point. Backers could choose a model-specific Storage Case, the more flexible X Module, or a combination of both depending on how they use their phone.

The campaign also expanded the product story beyond iPhone-only storage. Gen 2 was presented as a smartphone workflow for compatible iPhone and Android devices, with local storage, charging, backup organization, and creator-oriented connectivity positioned as parts of one system.

What stayed the same

The most important idea did not change between generations: users should have a practical way to keep and move their own files locally. Cloud services can remain useful, but local storage gives creators another option when bandwidth is limited, files are large, or direct physical control matters.

Gen 2 is therefore not a rejection of Gen 1. It is an expansion of the original premise. The Storage Case keeps the integrated everyday form. The X Module gives the same broader product family a form designed for changing devices and production setups.

Choosing the right form

Choose the Storage Case when a supported phone model and integrated daily-carry design are the priority. Choose the X Module when broader device flexibility, rig use, or peripheral connectivity matters more. For creators who move between both situations, the two forms are designed to support different parts of the same local workflow.

Current compatibility, production status, and availability should always be checked on iRe5.com before ordering. The product family will continue to evolve, but the purpose remains focused: make mobile storage and file movement more practical.
